Science of Security Hard Problems: A Lablet Perspective

This paper summarizes a selected set of five of the “hard problems” in the science of security. These problems were selected these problems because of their level of technical challenge, their potential operational significance, and their likelihood of benefiting from emphasis on scientific research methods and improved measurement capabilities. The goal is the hard problems to be crisply stated and well scoped, to assist us in assessing progress towards solutions.

Science of Security (SoS) Lablet Established at UIUC

The Science of Security (SoS) Lablet is housed in the Information Trust Institute at Illinois. It is contributing broadly to the development of security science while leveraging Illinois expertise in resiliency, which in this context means a system's demonstrable ability to maintain security properties even during ongoing cyber attacks.

A Network Architecture for Localized Electrical Energy Reduction, Generation and Sharing

The objective of this research is to understand how pervasive information changes energy production, distribution and use. The design of a more scalable and flexible electric infrastructure, encouraging efficient use, integrating local generation, and managing demand through awareness of energy availability and use over time, is investigated. The approach is to develop a cyber overlay on the energy distribution system in its physical manifestations: machine rooms, buildings, neighborhoods, isolated generation islands and regional grids.
