US-German Workshop on IoT/CPS: Final Report

The emerging new technology platforms, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet (II), have tremendously accelerated the commercialization and adoption of cyber-physical systems (CPS) applic ations. Delivery of a new generation of systems that perform well, are safe, secure and dependable, created an ever increasing demand and urgency for new and expanded science and technology foundations.  Developing the new foundations is hard because it requires bringing together competencies from different disciplines such as the information systems domain and engineering disciplines, but also from economics, physics, sociology, and human behavior and psychology. A broad spectrum of research is required to overcome these challenges. Combining the specific strengths in the US and in Europe – in particular in Germany – in order to provide comprehensive research results appears to be a promising approach for accelerating research progress in this highly important area.
