Feng Zhao is an Assistant Managing Director at Microsoft Research Asia, where he oversees multiple research areas including hardware computing, mobile and sensing, software analytics, systems, and wireless and networking. He is also an Affiliate Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Washington and an adjunct Professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His own research interest includes sensor networks, mobility, and cloud computing.

Prior to Microsoft Research Asia, he was a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research in Redmond in US, where he founded and managed the Networked Embedded Computing Group. The group has developed the MSR sensor mote, tiny Web Service, SenseWeb and SensorMap, Data Center Genome, JouleMeter, and GAMPS data compression.  With the help of some of these technologies, today the Microsoft data centers are among the most densely instrumented and monitored cloud computing infrastructures in the world.

Prior to joining Microsoft Research in March 2004, Dr. Zhao was a Principal Scientist and directed the Embedded Collaborative Computing Area at Xerox PARC. He led two projects, Collaborative Sensing (CoSense) and Smart Matter Diagnostics, that investigate how MEMS sensor and networking technology can change the way we build and interact with physical devices and environments. He was also a Consulting Faculty of Computer Science at Stanford University 1999-2006.
