INSIGHT: Infusing System Design and Sensor Technology in K-12 Education

Abstract:

INSIGHT, an innovative GK-12 STEM Fellowship Program integrates sensor technology with computing and information science in a standards-based science, technology, and engineering curricula. GK-12 STEM Fellows are teamed with science, technology, and physical education teachers for two years to carry out hands-on classroom activities utilizing technology and engineering practice with a focus on the use of sensors, computing, and information technology aligned with state curriculum standards. The project’s ultimate goal is the establishment of sensor, computing, and information technology as a foundational high school skill by accelerating the integration of sensor technology content into K-12 science and technology classes. This project encourages participation in engineering and technology from an even wider, more diverse group of students from rural Kansas. INSIGHT also hosts a two-week summer training program to  introduce partner teachers to various sensor technologies, as well as developing teaching strategies to effectively use this new knowledge in the classroom. This is also where our teacher/ graduate student teams meet for the first time. In the summer, project staff provide Fellows and Teachers with training and hands-on, sensor-driven science, engineering, and technology development and appropriate pedagogical strategies. During the academic year, Fellows support Participating Teachers in the classroom two times a week with content-specific sensor technology.
