Workshop Goals

The goal of the workshop is to help aspiring PIs understand what NSF (and importantly, the review panels convened by NSF) expect to see in a successful CPS proposal, and to articulate their ideas in a way that proposal reviewers can more easily understand how the proposed work will contribute to the advance the CPS research agenda.

The intended outcome of this workshop is to expand and enrich the CPS research community. By equipping early-stage researchers with a better grasp of the NSF's expectations and the CPS program's objectives, we anticipate a marked enhancement in the quality of project ideas emanating from the community. Additionally, we expect these projects to align more closely with the NSF's strategic goals in CPS research, ultimately driving innovation and advancement in the field.

About the Workshop

The workshop was co-located with the 2024 NSF CPS PI meeting that was held on the subsequent two days. We encouraged aspiring PIs to attend both the workshop and the CPS PI Meeting.    

The workshop featured engaging presentations, and panels from both NSF CPS Program Officers and previous CPS program and CPS CAREER grant recipients. These sessions were tailored to impart practical knowledge and firsthand experiences. A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to fostering networking and discussion opportunities. We believe that building connections between emerging researchers and established figures in the field is crucial. These interactions can lead to mentorship, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the CPS field. A poster session was organized for the aspiring PIs to foster networking and collaboration with both NSF program directors and CPS PIs in attendance.

This is a one-day workshop that was held at Vanderbilt University at the Vanderbilt Community Event Space (CES), 208 24th Ave N, Nashville, TN 37240

• Wednesday, March 6, 2024: Deadline for submitting applications. Applications are closed.
• Friday, March 8 2024: Notification confirming participation.
• Tuesday, March 19 2024: Full-Day Aspiring CPS PI Workshop.
• March 20-21: 2024 NSF CPS PI Meeting that Aspiring PIs can attend.

Participation
To maximize the opportunity for future PIs, preference was given to early career faculty and researchers who submitted NSF CPS proposals in past years but not been funded. We discouraged attendance by aspiring PIs who received CPS funding in previous rounds as a PI or Co-PI. Applications were reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, with early submissions having a greater chance of receiving invitations.
