
Geoffrey B. Saxe is a Distinguished Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on cognitive development with a concern for culture-cognition relations in the domain of mathematics. His programs of research include studies in urban schools in the United States, urban and rural areas of Brazil, and remote areas of Papua New Guinea. His theoretical and empirical contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including election to the National Academy of Education as well as two presidential citations from the American Educational Research Association. In addition, his most recent book,Cultural Development of Mathematical Ideas: Papua New Guinea Studies, has received book awards from the American Anthropological Association, the Cognitive Development Society, and the American Psychological Association.
