AI-Driven Speed Control System Marks One Year of Safer Roads on I-24

One year ago, the Vanderbilt Vector Lab and the Institute for Software Integrated Systems at Vanderbilt University launched an AI-driven Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control system along a 17-mile stretch of Interstate 24 in Middle Tennessee. Powered by high-resolution traffic data and real-time decision-making, this system has transformed traffic management, improving congestion response and roadway safety.

What We’ve Achieved in One Year:

70 million AI-driven control decisions optimizing traffic flow
55 million trips influenced by smart speed adjustments
98% effectiveness, with minimal need for intervention
✅ Seamless integration with Traffic Management Center tools for real-time oversight

Proven Safety & Efficiency Gains:

🚗 14% more accurate slowdown warnings, helping drivers react sooner
🚦 75% faster response to unexpected congestion
🛑 14% fewer crashes when the system controls traffic (compared to a 12% increase when inactive)

This first-of-its-kind real-world AI deployment has shown that reinforcement learning can effectively optimize freeway operations, reducing crashes and congestion. By combining cutting-edge research with real-world applications, this project paves the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient highways.
