Faculty Win Largest NSF Award in Boise State History to Create Semiconductor Workforce Center

Boise State University has secured a $7.4 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the largest NSF award in the university’s history, to establish AWESOME: the Center for Advancing Workforce Experience through Semiconductors, Outreach, and Mentoring Excellence.

The new NSF EPSCoR CREST Center will unite education, research, and mentorship to strengthen Idaho’s role in the semiconductor industry, while creating transformative opportunities for students entering this critical field. Goals include advancing energy-efficient AI through semiconductor research, positioning Boise State as a national leader in semiconductor education, and expanding pathways for student success.

Led by Eric Jankowski, director of the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering, the interdisciplinary team will leverage institutional, state, and industry partnerships to drive innovation in semiconductor fabrication and workforce development.

“This historic award marks a proud and defining moment for Boise State,” said Interim President Jeremiah Shinn. “It affirms the creativity and expertise of our faculty, expands opportunity for our students, and strengthens Idaho’s position in an industry that is vital to our nation’s future.”
