NSF Announces Funding to Establish the National AI Research Resource Operations Center

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a new solicitation to create the National AI Research Resource Operations Center (NAIRR-OC); a major step toward transitioning the NAIRR Pilot, launched in 2024, into a sustainable national program.

The NAIRR Pilot has already connected more than 400 U.S. research teams with advanced computing, datasets, software, and models, driving breakthroughs in agriculture, drug discovery, cybersecurity, and education. Backed by 14 federal agencies and 28 private-sector partners, the effort expands critical AI access for researchers and educators.

The new NAIRR-OC will:

  • Develop a framework and management strategy for scaling the NAIRR.

  • Integrate advanced computing and data resources.

  • Launch a centralized web portal for streamlined access to AI tools.

  • Grow a nationwide AI research community through outreach and collaboration.

This initiative aligns with the White House AI Action Plan, advancing U.S. AI leadership and strengthening the nation’s research capacity.

By building the NAIRR-OC, NSF is laying the foundation for a nationwide AI infrastructure that ensures researchers and students across the country can access cutting-edge AI resources.
