Xu Receives Bement Award for Groundbreaking Cybersecurity Research
Dongyan Xu, Samuel D. Conte Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University and director of CERIAS, has been awarded the 2024 Arden L. Bement Jr. Award — Purdue’s highest honor for contributions to pure and applied science and engineering. Xu is recognized for his pioneering work in cybersecurity, particularly for advancing security in cyber-physical systems (CPS) such as unmanned aerial systems, industrial control systems, and IoT networks.
Over the past decade, Xu has led over $28 million in research projects supported by government and industry. His cross-layer security methodologies have strengthened critical infrastructures, influenced global IoT security standards, and led to fixes adopted by companies like Apple, Google, and Intel. He also contributed to securing next-generation manufacturing through the Department of Energy’s CyManII initiative.
Beyond research, Xu has impacted national cybersecurity policies through NSF's ACTION Institute and collaborations with MITRE, Sandia National Laboratories, and Cisco Systems. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers and earned best paper awards at leading cybersecurity conferences. Xu will deliver a lecture at Purdue’s Excellence in Research Award Lectures on May 5.
