PURPOSE AND SCOPE With the ever-increasing complexity of computing systems, and their increasingly complex interactions with the physical environment, service-oriented computing (SOC) is considered today as a key technology for the development of robust and high quality distributed applications. Extensive research and development in the past few years has pushed SOC technology into numerous application areas including business processes, high-performance computing, web-based services, embedded systems, and many others. With more and more services being moved into the 'cloud', and the increasing prevalence of ubiquitous end devices that interface with physical world, it is timely to reexamine the directions of SOC research and identify new research opportunities and challenges. For example, with the maturity of virtualization techniques and infrastructure, the wider adoption of 'clouds' becomes more prominent, while research on the applications of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS remains active. Furthermore, ubiquitous devices, context-aware systems, and sensor networks are increasingly being used in areas such as transportation, healthcare and disaster control; and this fact is making cyber-physical systems a challenging area for the SOC research community.
