NSF/DIMACS Workshop for Aspiring PIs in Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (2014)

Date: Aug 17, 2014 10:00 am – Aug 18, 2014 1:30 am

This one-day workshop was designed for researchers who aspired to participate in NSF's Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program. The workshop was by invitation or application, and was open to people with research interests in secure and trustworthy computing who were not currently funded by SaTC or any of its predecessor programs (Trustworthy Computing and/or Cyber Trust). The goal of this workshop was to help aspiring SaTC PIs understand what NSF (and NSF review panels) were looking for in reviewing SaTC proposals, with the goal of increasing the quality of submitted proposals and, in turn, the percentage of proposals funded. The workshop was held in San Diego, California at the same location as the Usenix Security conference (see https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity14/), but was not being sponsored by that conference. The agenda for the workshop included:

  • Brief talks by NSF Program Officers (POs) on their goals for the SaTC Program, and the opportunity for participants to pose questions to the POs.
  • Several research talks by current SaTC PIs.
  • Discussions of SaTC scope
  • A mock review panel session.
  • Discussions of common mistakes made in proposals.
  • One-on-one meetings with SaTC program officers.
