NSF/DIMACS Workshop for Aspiring PIs in Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace

Date: Oct 15, 2012 7:00 am – Oct 15, 2012 10:45 pm
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina

This one-day workshop was designed for researchers who aspired to participate in NSF's Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program. The workshop was by invitation only, and was open to people with research interests in secure and trustworthy computing who were not currently funded by SaTC or any of its predecessor programs (Trustworthy Computing and/or Cyber Trust). The goal of this workshop was to help aspiring SaTC PIs understand what NSF (and NSF review panels) were looking for in reviewing SaTC proposals, with the goal of increasing the quality of submitted proposals and, in turn, the percentage of proposals funded.

The workshop was held in Raleigh NC at the same location as the ACM CCS conference (see http://www.sigsac.org/ccs/CCS2012/), but was not being sponsored by that conference.

The agenda for the workshop included:

  • Brief talks by NSF Program Officers (POs) on their goals for the SaTC Program, and the opportunity for participants to pose questions to the POs.
  • Several research talks by current SaTC PIs.
  • A panel of current SaTC PIs on what it takes to formulate and carry out a SaTC research agenda.
  • "Ice-breaker" small group discussions to foster discussion in small settings and "match-making" for researchers with related interests.
  • Discussions of SaTC scope.
  • Discussions of common mistakes made in proposals.
