Possible security threats linked to recycled phone numbers.

A new study has warned against the possible security issues that might result from recycled phone numbers.  With so many companies and services using mobile phone numbers for authentication, attackers can cycle through available numbers shown on a number change interface and tell if any of them are associated with previous owner’s account.  It’s then easy for an attacker to reset the account.  These numbers are often associated with higher security with bank accounts and health information.  Over 35 million phone numbers are disconnected and then reassigned each year in the US.
