Is the program going to be in-person or virtual?

We anticipate being an in-person program for Summer 2024.

How long will the program run?

The program will run for 10 weeks May 28, 2024 – August 2, 2024.

Is there housing available and how much will it cost?

Our program does not offer on-campus housing, nor are we responsible for helping you find housing. Below are some courtesy links to a few options available to students over the summer.

How will I be paid?

Payments for this summer will likely be distributed in two bulk installments. If you are a VUSE student, payments will be distributed monthly via direct deposit.

When will I be paid?

Please note that payments DO NOT get distributed immediately. It may take up to several weeks into the summer program to get your first paycheck. You will need save up and/or plan accordingly.

What perks are associated with being at Vanderbilt over the summer?

While you will not have access to meal plans, having a Vanderbilt ID card over the summer enables you to ride Nashville MTA public transportation for free. By summer of 2024 digital card use should be enabled on all MTA buses. Please visit the VU website for details here.

Can I take a vacation?

Yes, with approval from your supervisor. It is imperative that any anticipated absences are communicated with your PI at the outset of hiring. Please also email Gerilynn Pearce at gerilynn.pearce@vanderbilt.edu to keep her informed of absences or leave-of-absences due to extenuating circumstances.

Is the program binding? Am I required to participate if I am selected for the program?

Once an award offer has been made, students are given a window of time to accept or decline. This time is meant to give students the opportunity to weigh all options that may be available to them for the summer.

I've been accepted, what are the next steps?

If accepted, all interns will be sent and asked to complete the intake webform by the given deadline.

I am from another University, am I eligible to apply?

Yes.

When is the last day to complete the application?

March 3rd, 2024 is the last day for applications to be submitted. We are not accepting any further applicants after that date. If you miss the deadline and are interested in future opportunities with VU-ISIS, please sign up to join our mailing list here.

When will appilcation decisions be made?

All applicants who applied within the given deadline will be reviewed and given a decision no later than March 22nd, 2024.

Where is VU-ISIS located?

VU-ISIS is located a few blocks from the Vanderbilt campus on Nashville's Music Row. The address is 1025 16th Ave S. Suite 102, Nashville, TN 37212. Directions can be found at https://www.isis.vanderbilt.edu/contact

IMPORTANT: GUIDANCE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Are applications from international students accepted?

Yes. However, this year we can ONLY accommodate students who will be physically present in the U.S. for the duration of the internship program, regardless of citizenship status. Again, this is an in-person internship.

I'm an international student who has never worked in the U.S. before; how do I obtain a SSN (Social Security Number)?

Please follow this link: https://www.vanderbilt.edu/isss/living-and-working-in-the-us/social-security-number-ssn-itin/#afterSSN

I'm an international student who has never worked in the U.S. before; how do I obtain a Visa?

In order to submit a J-1 Intern Visa Application the following is required:

What paperwork will I have to do with my Sponsoring Professor/PI?

A comprehensive list of forms and tasks to complete with your PI can be found here. It includes but is not limited to:

  • Complete the Supervisor Agreement to Sponsorship
  • Complete the Internship Activities and Goals
  • Complete the VDEQ form
  • Complete an English proficiency with your PI

Other Considerations for international students...

  • Your first paycheck will not be immediate. You will be responsible for having money on hand to initially secure a place to live and purchase food before your first paycheck.
  • Rent is expensive in Nashville. You are encouraged to begin searching sooner rather than later. Short-term Airbnbs or sublets are ideal due to the nature of the timeframe.
  • You will have to have/create a U.S. bank account. Direct deposit is required for payroll distribution.
  • Upon arrival in the U.S., once you have been in the U.S. for 10 business days you must apply for a Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Please note you are not provided housing, meals or transportation.
