NSF CAREER Award Fuels UK Researcher’s Breakthroughs in Robotics

University of Kentucky researcher Biyun Xie, Ph.D., has received a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to advance research in human-robot shared control for robotic telemanipulation, technology that enables humans and robots to collaborate safely and effectively in remote or hazardous environments.

An assistant professor in UK’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Xie is developing systems that improve the reliability and robustness of shared control operations used in applications like space exploration, where robots face extreme conditions such as high radiation and temperature fluctuations.

“Shared control allows a human operator and autonomous controller to jointly control the robot together,” Xie explained. “Reliability of shared control remains an open research problem that limits practical applications.”

Beyond research, the award supports STEM education outreach with local high schools and undergraduate mentorship through UK’s ECE Undergraduate Research Program, expanding participation and representation in robotics.

Xie, who was inspired by films like WALL-E and Big Hero 6, hopes to inspire a new generation of roboticists.
