The imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time.
Abstract: This project develops an integrated design and simulation environment for the creation of miniature capsule robots (MCRs). An MCR is a biocompatible Cyber-Physical System (CPS) designed to operate in the human body to accomplish diagnostic or therapeutic tasks (e.g., colonoscopy, abdominal surgery, etc.). A typical MCR has to fulfill three main constraints: safety, low power operation and small size. Advances in miniaturization of electronic devices have made MCRs a reality.

Abstract: The primary objective in this project is to lay the foundations of a cyber-physical infrastructure for creative design and making of realizable products by addressing fundamental barriers to participation, model- based engineering, and information sharing. The focus is on the following three aims:

Abstract:  The objective of this project is to improve the performance of autonomous systems in dynamic environments, such as disaster recovery, by integrating perception, planning paradigms, learning, and databases. For the next generation of autonomous systems to be truly effective in terms of tangible performance improvements (e.g., long-term operations, complex and rapidly changing environments), a new level of intelligence must be attained.

Abstract: The objective of this research is to develop tools for comprehensive design and optimization of air traffic flow management capabilities at multiple spatial and temporal resolutions: at a national airspace-wide scale and one-day time horizon (strategic time- frame); and at a regional scale (of one or a few Centers) and a two-hour time horizon (tactical time-frame). The following results were obtained in Year 4 of the project:

Abstract: Oceans are drivers of global climate; they are home to some of our most important and diverse ecosystems; and they provide a substantial amount to the world’s economy as a major source of food and employment. Sound plays a vital role in the ocean ecosystem, as many organisms rely on the acoustic environment for navigation, communication, detecting predators and finding food.

Abstract: The research objective of this project is to bridge two disparate paths to the control of hybrid dynamical systems—namely, symbolic model-based and Lyapunov analysis-based approaches—via convex programming in order to address major challenges in hybrid control. Hybrid systems are characterized by the presence of both continuous dynamics and discrete logic that interact with each other.

Abstract: Until now, the "cyber" component of automobiles has consisted of control algorithms and associated software for vehicular subsystems designed to achieve one or more performance, efficiency, reliability, comfort, or safety (PERCS) goals, primarily based on short-term intrinsic vehicle sensor data. However, there exist many extrinsic factors that can affect the degree to which these goals can be achieved.

Abstract: The PIs are developing their novel modeling paradigm, Generalized Synchronization Trees (GSTs), into a rich framework for both describing cyber-physical systems (CPSs) and studying their behavior under interconnection. GSTs were inspired by Milner’s use of Synchronization Trees (STs) to model interconnected computing processes, but GSTs generalize the mathematical structure of their forebears in such a way as to encompass many classes of CPSs.

Abstract: Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in collaboration with physicians and nurses from Intensive Care Unit, Carle Foundation Hospital are developing a new initiative on engineering next generation of medical systems. This project is part of the initiative and focuses on exploring the efficient and safe operation of integrated Emergency Cyber Physical Human (ECPH) systems in emergency scenarios from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) environment. The key requirements are:
