The imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time.
Abstract: Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) requires tight coordination between computational systems and the physical devices that deliver the prescribed treatment plan, making it a perfect example of cyber-physical system. The current approach to addressing tumor motion in radiation therapy is to treat it as a problem and not as a therapeutic opportunity. Existing treatment planning methods attempt to create dose distributions that are at best dosimetrically equivalent to the static case.

Abstract: Robotic devices are excellent candidates for delivering repetitive and intensive practice that can restore functional use of the upper limbs, even years after a stroke. Rehabilitation of the wrist and hand in particular are critical for recovery of function, since hands are the primary interface with the world. However, robotic devices that focus on hand rehabilitation are limited due to excessive cost, complexity, or limited functionality.

Abstract: This project addresses the management of the air traffic system, a cyber-physical sys- tem where the need for a tight connection between the computational algorithms and the physical system is critical to safe, reliable and efficient performance. Indeed, the lack of this tight connection is one of the reasons current systems are overwhelmed by the ever increasing traffic and suffer when there is any deviation from the expected (e.g., changing weather).

Abstract: This grant provides funding for establishing the scientific foundations of a product innovation process that can engage a vastly larger pool of talent to generate new ideas and to create new cyber-physical products. The primary objective is to address fundamental issues pertaining to natural interfaces, behavioral modeling and secure knowledge sharing, with particular emphasis on their integration.

Abstract: A hybrid system is a dynamical model that describes the coupled evolution of both continuous‐ valued variables and discrete patterns. A prime example of such a system is a power electronic circuit, where the semiconductor transistors behave as ideal switches whose switching actions effectively change the circuit topology (i.e., the discrete pattern) that in turn defines the dynamics of currents and voltages (i.e., the continuous variables) and hence the switching actions.

Abstract: This project focuses on the formal design of semi-autonomous automotive Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). Rather than disconnecting the driver from the vehicle, the goal is to obtain a vehicle where the degree of autonomy is continuously changed in real-time as a function of certified uncertainty ranges in driver behavior and environment reconstruction.

Abstract: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common motor disorder  of  central  origin  in  childhood  and affects at least 2 children per 1000 live births every year. This project will research new methods and tools in motor/cognitive assessment for small children (5‐8 years old) with Cerebral Palsy.

Abstract: Quality control in high-volume manufacturing is commonly performed using Statistics-based quality control techniques. These techniques require large data sets in order to specify acceptable variation limits. These statistics-based QC approaches are not applicable in small-lot high-value manufacturing where it is important to ensure the quality of each one of the final products. Previous model based process control used simplified representations of the actual physics of the process.

Abstract: The goal of this project is to develop fundamental theory, computationally efficient algorithms, and real- world experiments for the analysis and design of safety-critical cyber-physical transportation systems with human operators. We envision a nearby future in which roads will be populated by networks of smart vehicles that will cooperate with each other, with the surrounding infrastructure, and with their drivers to make transportation safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient.

Abstract: This project has two closely related objectives. The first is to design and evaluate new Cyber Transportation System (CTS) architectures, protocols and applications for improved traffic safety and traffic operations. The second is to design and develop an integrated traffic-driving-networking simulator. The project takes a multi-disciplinary approach that combines cyber technologies, transportation engineering and human factors.
