This report, Ensuring American Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing, was prepared  by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and the President’s Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC). The report provides a strategy and specific recommendations for revitalizing the Nation’s leadership in advanced manufacturing. The proposed startegy has two main components: (1) Creation of a fertile environment for innovation so that the United States provides the overall best environment for business.

The Report, edited by Tariq Samad and Anuradha Annaswamy provides overview, success stories and research challenges for control technology. The report includes a chapter on Cyber-physical Systems written by R.S. Baheti and Helen Gill. The report was sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society, Institute for Advanced Study, Technical University of Munich, CoTeSys, Technical University of Munich, Deutsche Forschungs-Gemeinschaft, and the US National Science Foundation. The report was published in February, 2011.

The document defines the CPS research agenda in Germany. First it describes the rapidly growing research field of CPS. It provides a brief introduction to CPS, describing the capabilities and the many opportunities for application and new business models. The opportunities and challenges for technology, society and the economy associated with the profound change are analysed on the basis of an investigation into the characteristic features and capabilities of CPS. Overcoming these challenges is the aim of the as yet undefined CPS research agenda.
