The 2021 CPS PI Meeting information will be handled through the meeting website at https://cps-vo.org/group/cps-pimtg21. This site provides access to the meeting registration, program agenda, program sessions details, artifact submission webforms, virtual venue, and other important information.
To register for the meeting, select the "Meeting Registration" tab on the meeting website or visit https://cps-vo.org/group/cps-pimtg21/registration. The nontransferable meeting registration code will be sent in the official invitation letter to each PI, Co-PI, other project personnel, and other official invited guests. Please complete your online registration no later than Friday, May 28, 2021.
Each funded CPS project is required to be represented. We expect that at least one PI, Co-PI, or other approved designate from each project institution will attend each day of the meeting. If you are the lead PI and cannot attend this year's PI meeting, you are responsible for identifying the name of at least one alternate to serve as the project representative. In this case, please send an email message to Sandip Roy (saroy@nsf.gov) and Frankie King (frankie.king@vanderbilt.edu) to provide the name of the person who will be attending, then inform this person to register for the meeting.
There is no "registration fee" for the meeting, but it is still very important for you to register by the date mentioned. Please be sure to enter accurately the agency award number and the award project title for the CPS project the attendee will represent if such project exists.
Due to the impact that COVID-19 continues to have on quarantining across the country, the 2021 CPS PI Meeting will be coordinated virtually via Hopin and Gather. All sessions, with the exception of the poster, demonstration, and social events, will be coordinated via Hopin. The poster, demonstration and social events will be coordinated via Gather.

As in the past, a major goal of CPS PI Meetings is to highlight achievements in the CPS program. A preliminary draft agenda will be posted to the PI Meeting website that will be updated continuously as we approach the meeting dates. For this year's meeting, we are excited to report about the following programmed activities that are designed to maximize the CPS community's active participation and input:
Lightning Talks
Each active CPS project team, including those in no cost extension (NCE) status, is required to develop a lightning talk for the PI meeting, consisting of a 90-second-long talk recorded over a single PowerPoint slide. For collaborative projects (multi-institution, each with unique award numbers), only one lightning talk video is required. The lightning talk should introduce the project team, state the main goals of the project, and highlight a couple of key results – it is meant to interest the audience about the topic and impact of your project. The lightning talks will be merged according to topic, and these longer videos will be displayed in the Hopin platform at the PI meeting. PIs will also have the option to include their lightning talk alongside their poster in the Gather meeting space. Poster Sessions
Each active CPS project team, including those in no cost extension (NCE) status, is required to develop a poster for the PI meeting. This means that collaborative projects (multi-institution, each with unique award numbers) can submit a single joint poster covering the entire project. The PI of the lead institution is responsible for ensuring that each aspect of the research is covered. Please inform the meeting organizers if you plan to submit more than one team project poster. The lead PI or alternate(s) for each project is responsible for submission of electronic copies at https://cps-vo.org/group/cps-pimtg21/submit-poster no later than 11:59pm AoE on Monday, May 3, 2021.

Longer Project Presentations:
A few project teams may be selected to make longer (5-10 minute) presentations which will be streamed during the PI meeting. We will reach out individually to PIs about these presentations.
Demonstration of CPS Technology:
The program committee is very interested in seeing practical demonstrations of CPS technologies achieved through the NSF CPS program, and the online format provides a unique opportunity for PIs to share technology demonstrations from their labs or from the field using ‘pre-recorded’ videos. A demonstration enables PIs to showcase their research, prototypes, simulators, and real-time systems so that non-experts understand the significance of the CPS Technology in the real world and encourage wider adoption of common frameworks.
Demonstrations will be in a pre-recorded virtual setting and will target a large and diverse audience, including graduate students and postdocs. Presenting in the pre-recorded Demonstration Session is optional.
Those interested should email the proposed demonstration idea to Rose Faghih (rtfaghih@uh.edu) with subject line “2021 CPS PI Meeting: Demo Idea”, and an attachment that includes the following information:
- Names and affiliations of PIs and additional contributors (e.g. graduate students and postdocs) as well as the CPS grant title and grant number.
- A one-paragraph summary of the proposed demonstration.
The deadline for submitting the demonstration ideas is COB Monday April 1, 2021.
The CPS PI meeting program committee will review the ideas and let the PI know whether or not the idea is accepted by April 16th. A link to submit the video will be provided in the acceptance email. The pre-recorded demonstration video can be at most 10 minutes.
Workshops:
As part of this event, we are planning to host a number of mini-workshops on innovative topics in CPS. We invite the submission of workshop proposals from the CPS community that can define the future of CPS research vision and introduce recent research advances to interested PIs and graduate students. Workshops should include a mix of invited presentations and panel discussions that encourage active participation from attendees. Suggested length of workshops is 90 minutes, but longer workshops of 2-2.5 hours can also be accommodated. Proposers may be contacted by the committee to refine the content and length of their proposed workshops based on other submissions and program goals.

Call for Graduate Student Participation
We invite graduate students to participate in the 2021 National Science Foundation Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) PI meeting. Students are encouraged to present their ongoing research related to the broad topic of CPS. The goal is to provide students with the opportunity to present and discuss their research, including questions, approaches and results. In this way, students will have the opportunity to receive guidance on various aspects of their research from researchers working in the CPS domain as well as interact with other students and participants of the CPS PI meeting
Eligibility: This call is open to all graduate students; however, each participant should have a well-formed research problem statement that they can discuss.
Submission Guidelines: Submissions must include the PhD student’s CV (including the expected graduation date) and a 1-page research summary document (excluding citations) on the topic of the student’s dissertation with the following structure:
- Title
- Problem
- State-of-the-art Summary
- Proposed Approach
- Results
- Conclusions and Future Work
The name of the PhD advisor must be clearly stated (``supervised by …‘’) on the beginning of the research summary document, under the title of the student’s dissertation. Submitting files must be in PDF format and electronically submitted via email (see Submission Instructions below).
Submission Instructions: Submissions should be sent to Dr. Daphney-Stavroula Zois at dzois@albany.edu by the stated deadline. Submitting files must be attached to email with the subject line containing the text “Application for Student Participation in the 2021 NSF CPS PI meeting:” followed by the full name of the applicant.

Selection Process: Submissions will be reviewed and assessed by the CPS PI meeting Organizing committee. Selected PhD students will be invited to present their ongoing research related to the broad topic of CPS in the 2021 NSF CPS PI meeting. The expected length of the talk is 20 minutes.
Call for Undergraduate Student Participation
Undergraduate students are invited to participate in the 2021 National Science Foundation Cyber-Physical Systems PI Meeting, to be held online on June 2-4, 2021. We would like for the PI meeting to serve as a forum for undergraduate students who are excited about research, and about cyber-physical systems in particular, to present their work and meet other researchers in the field. With this in mind, we would like to give interested undergraduate students the opportunity to make short presentations (5 minutes) about their CPS research. We particularly would like students involved in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) experiences to participate but would also welcome involvement of other students who are working with CPS Program PIs or are pursuing CPS research.
Interested students should send an e-mail to Sandip Roy at saroy@nsf.gov with their and their research mentor’s contact information, along with a paragraph about their research work. We may select a subset of the submitting students to present at the meetings, depending on the number of submissions received, the relevance of the topic, and scheduling constraints.
