Abstract:
This new CPS Synergy project is concerned with Management-Coupled Cyber and Physical Infrastructures (MCCPIs), which are infrastructures whose cyber- and physical- components are coupled by their wide-area management functions. The main objective of the project is to develop a framework and tool set for threat assessment for MCCPIs which acknowledges their cyber, physical, and human elements, and to apply these tools and methods in a case study of the air traffic management system. Three broad types of threats are considered: en

Co-Design of Networking and Decentralized Control to Enable Aerial Networks in an Uncertain Airspace
Abstract:
Airborne networking utilizes direct flight-to-to-flight communication for flexible information sharing, safe maneuvering, and coordination of time-critical missions. It is challenging because of the high mobility, stringent safety requirements, and uncertain airspace environment. This project uses a co-design approach that exploits the mutual benefits of networking and decentralized mobility control in an uncertain heterogeneous environment.

Dynamical-Network Evaluation and Design Tools for Strategic-to-Tactical Air Traffic Flow Management
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to develop tools for comprehensive design and optimization of air traffic flow management capabilities at multiple spatial and temporal resolutions: at a national airspace-wide scale and one-day time horizon (strategic time- frame); and at a regional scale (of one or a few Centers) and a two-hour time horizon (tactical time-frame).
The following results were obtained in Year 4 of the project:
